As we experienced another blessed Ramadan and Eid, we reflect not only on our spiritual connection but also on the importance of communal unity. For years, the method of moon sighting by the Chicago Hilal Committee has guided our observance of Ramadan. However, it has come to light that discrepancies in moon sighting have occurred three times in the last five years, raising concerns among many in our community.
While these challenges may arise from the limitations of traditional methods, they present an opportunity for us to embrace the advancements of modern science and technology. By incorporating astronomical calculations that track the precise birth of the moon, we can achieve greater accuracy and consistency in determining the start of Ramadan. This approach is not only scientifically sound but is also increasingly recognized across Muslim communities globally.
Our ultimate goal is unity. By adopting verified technological methods, we can align our practices and avoid divisions that may stem from conflicting moon sighting reports. Such changes require thoughtful discussions and collaboration, ensuring that our traditions are respected while embracing tools that enhance our collective experience.
We invite you to participate in an open forum to discuss this important matter, share your perspectives, and work towards a solution that strengthens our community’s cohesion. Details of the forum will be shared soon.
Let us embark on this journey together, guided by faith, knowledge, and mutual respect.
Warm regards,
